Letters I Never Sent

Almost

Almost may be the most painful word I have ever known.

Because it asks you to grieve something that was never fully yours.

I used to think the hardest things to lose were the things we had.

But sometimes,

it is the things we almost had

that stay with us the longest.

We stood so close to the life we imagined that I could almost mistake it for a memory.

I could already see the quiet mornings.

The familiar laughter.

The comfort of no longer wondering.

Funny how the heart remembers a future

that never happened.
